going the distance

"A line is a dot which went for a walk."

Words quoted from the whimsical abstract-surrealist artist, Joan Miro, have never left my menagerie of art history trivia.

Upon recent conversation with a friend, I was reminded yet again of this famous saying, which got me thinking further about the ways we define distance and the act of travel.

When we refer to journeys, travels and escapades, we naturally share documentary photographs of Florence, Paris, Cambodia, sometimes aspiring to mimic the images of the NY Times, Conde Nast or National Geographic.

So with a digital camera, I threw caution to the wind and defied the norm, taking photos of your average sidewalk.

Journeys are sometimes more about what we tread on rather than what we see.

The physical act of sole to ground is easily overlooked, but once made conscious of, can conjure up feelings of eating from a leaf with your hands.

  2. Aside from the obvious enjoyment we derive from viewing the artful pictures and the insightful notes provided, with each new post, we get to know the inner being of the author at a different level a little more.

Way to go, Rachel. Keep up with the great work!
